I can boldly say, fufu is one of the favorites delicacies among African meals; notwithstanding the hectic method of getting it all set for consumption. Growing up, i have come to learn several methods of preparing fufu which include the recent evolving technologies such as the Fufu- machine; powdered form, blending methods and the archaic-yet common method thus pounding one’s cassava in a mortar with a pestle; both being ancient devices commonly found in an African Woman’s Kitchen.
Mostly prepared on weekends in most African homes due to the hectic means of preparing it, Fufu is consumed with all kinds of soups such as Peanut Soup, Palm-nut Soup, Light-soup and what have you?
Looking at all the various methods of preparing Fufu, I think it is high time we deal away with the archaic method; which is the use of Mortar and pestle. This method doesn’t only drain your energy in the course of preparing it but is also unhygienic in a sense that, the one pounding sweats profusely throughout the process.
Moreover, the hygienic state of the Mortar and Pestle is always in question. (Yeah I know you can keep yours clean anytime you use it but to what extent? How do you sanitize them to get rid of all the hidden bacterial, )
On the 23rd Of February 2017, the Founder and Leader of the International Central Gospel Church ( ICGC) made a statement that, ” fufu is killing most Africans” while speaking on the need for a change in the mindset of Africans to facilitate growth and development. Many fufu lovers got offended by His statement and read different meanings into it but I looked at the statement from His point of view.
NB: I am not against Fufu, I only suggest we get rid of the Archaic methods and go in for the evolving technologies. Fufu powder or get your cassava blended then prepare it like you do Banku. ( How my dad prepares His fufu)
Fufu, I call it the “Pro” among all the African Delicacies. Yeah i know you side with me.
