Marathon runner Johanna Pakenham went into a coma after drinking almost five litres of water.

She had hyponatremia, a condition caused by drinking too much water, diluting all the salts and minerals in the body.

Ms Pakenham now wants people to understand the danger of drinking too much, but nutritionist Johanna Hignett says as a population, we don’t drink enough.

The violent demonstration that hit the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in October last year, leading to the destruction of properties worth several millions of cedis, is now history, but the fallout has now become a herculean task the security agencies and the university authorities have to deal with.

A planned students’ customary procession, which had reportedly lost favour with the university authorities in October last year, was stopped by security personnel on campus. The violence that ensued led to the destruction of offices and anything the students could set sight on. Several students were also injured – a development which led to the closure of the university.

The students were not happy that a popular hall of residence – University Hall (Katanga) – had been turned into a mixed hall by the administrators of the university. They also expressed worry about abuse of power by KNUST security guards, and, above all, Vice-Chancellor Prof Kwasi Obiri-Danso, who turned deaf ears to demands for the reversal of Katanga Hall into a mixed residence.

A year down the line, the President of the local chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof Charles Marfo, told Kumasi-based Pure FM that members of UTAG have not overcome the trauma they went through that day. As a result, he said, some of the lecturers, including himself, had decided to carry their registered weapons anytime they go to the campus to lecture, because they are afraid of being attacked.

Prof. Marfo further revealed that the implications of the students’ ‘needless’ protest had resulted in some lecturers fearing for their lives and employing various mechanisms to ensure their safety.

“Do you know that after that, there are lecturers who come to the office with their weapons in their cars? I’m telling you today. Yes, if I have registered my gun, then if I’m coming to class, I have to bring it along because the child I thought was a kid says he isn’t, he can set my car ablaze. Kwame, are you saying we need to celebrate?”

Prof Marfo continued: “I can tell you confidently I am one of them. I feel like every student involved must apologise. I know a lecturer who still fears for his life. What kind of life is this? Are you saying this is what we need to celebrate?”

A worried Charles Marfo, who lost the KNUST Pro-Vice-Chancellor elections to Prof. Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson a couple of years ago, contended that the protest should not be celebrated and that the actions of the students were reckless and needless.

“If you are not the one talking about it, I have not even thought about it. If anything, the students’ hurt has brought about a transformation in [the] attitude of some of the teachers. They need to ask God for forgiveness for this. If a student you are lecturing is able to set your car ablaze, the student has the capability of killing you, and so next time, if I come to lecture such a student, I don’t have to smile.”

Reached on phone, Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe, University Relations Officer, he told The Chronicle that the school had not sanctioned any such security measure.

According to him, KNUST had over one thousand lecturers, and won’t subscribe to such directive (lecturers carrying weapons). Quizzed on security on campus, Dr Norris Bekoe revealed to this paper that KNUST was calm with the few police officers who are on campus. Attempts made by The Chronicle to speak to Prof Charles Marfo were not successful. The first call which was put through to his cell phone was not responded to. The second went alright, but was terminated.

Kanye West joined The Late Late Show With James Corden for “Airpool” Karaoke Monday night, where the rapper slipped up and almost equated his five-year marriage to Kim Kardashian to dealing with a mental breakdown and being massively in debt. Fortunately for Kanye, he caught himself before doing so, but his explanation wasn’t much better.

While talking about how people can relate to his music because of his own experiences, Kanye said, “If it was just, ‘Oh, we grew up with this guy’s music and now he’s a superstar’, it’s less compelling than, ‘Oh, this guy had a mental breakdown. This guy was in debt. This guy’s been through…’” That’s when Kanye caught himself before saying something that could have gotten him in trouble at home. But again, the save wasn’t much better. “Ya know, not been through, but this guy has a beautiful five years of marriage,” Kanye said. “You know, marriage years are different than human — like, you know how dogs are, what is it, seven years? Every marriage year is like a hundred years. It’s like 500 years of marriage.”

Marriage comments aside, Kanye’s Airpool Karaoke appearance was pretty epic. The rapper has famously bailed on Carpool Karaoke on multiple occasions, but Kanye made up for it by strapping in not only himself and Corden, but his entire choir and performed the 2004 hit “Jesus Walks.” Kanye, whose new album is titled “Jesus Is King,” has spoken a lot recently about his newfound relationship with God, and it’s that relationship that compelled him to change the lyrics to “Jesus Walks.”

Where Kanye used to rap, “I wanna talk to God but I’m afraid ‘cause we ain’t spoke in so long,” he now says, “I wanna talk to God, I ain’t afraid.”

After shutting down plans for one “Game of Thrones” spinoff earlier today, HBO has pivoted to a new prequel series — this one based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood” novel. “House of the Dragon” received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order Tuesday afternoon, marking a new direction for the network’s most profitable franchise.

Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” director Miguel Sapochnik will return to direct the pilot as well as additional episodes. He will serve as co-showrunner alongside Ryan Condal, the former co-creator and showrunner of USA Network’s “Colony” series, who’s also writing the pilot. Martin and Vince Gerardis are on board as executive producers, making the new team setting “Game of Thrones” future entirely male. Earlier Tuesday, HBO nixed plans for another prequel series from writer and showrunner Jane Goldman. Even after shooting a pilot and acquiring a big name star (Naomi Watts), network executives decided not to move forward with their first-choice spinoff.

“House of the Dragon” is indeed focused on the formation of House Targaryen, a family line that eventually produced the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Don’t expect an Emilia Clarke appearance, however, as the prequel series is set 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” “The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories,” Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming, said in a statement. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan, and George.” Sapochnik won an Emmy for directing the famous “Battle of the Bastards,” but he also helmed well-regarded episodes like “Hardhome” and “Winds of Winter.” His next project is the Amblin Studios’ film, “Bios,” starring Tom Hanks, which is set for release in fall 2020.

While Goldman’s “Game of Thrones” spinoff was given the green light to shoot a pilot back in June 2018, this latest prequel series was first reported in September 2019, not long after the series finale of the original show. Then, it was reported that Condal was reworking a pilot idea from the original five “Game of Thrones” spinoffs HBO was developing, based on a pitch originally developed by Bryan Cogman.

The state of the other “Game of Thrones” spinoffs are still undecided, save for Goldman’s now-dismissed pilot.

While it’s not quite time to crack open the eggnog, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson are already starting to spread the Christmas spirit with their festive new duet: a revamped take on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Last year the Oscar-winning holiday classic — written in 1944 by Frank Loesser and sung by the likes of Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and countless others — was banned from some radio station playlists after its lyrics were deemed “no longer appropriate,” as Cleveland’s Star 102 employee Glenn Anderson put it. The song features a male voice urging his female date to stick around and get “closer” despite her protests that she “really can’t stay.” While she sings “I ought to say no, no, no,” he responds, “What’s the sense in hurting my pride?”

The lack of consent implied has proved problematic in the #MeToo era, prompting Legend to team up with Insecure actress and writer Natasha Rothwell on tweaking the lyrics to give the female protagonist more agency and control. Her date is also more passive and less pushy.

President Trump used his first trip to Chicago as president to publicly disparage the city and its police chief, who had boycotted his appearance.

“It’s embarrassing to us as a nation, all over the world they’re talking about Chicago,” Trump said Monday in a speech at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference. “Afghanistan is a safe place by comparison.” Before the event, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters that he would not attend Trump’s speech in protest of what he called the president’s “racial insults.” “I can’t in good conscience stand by while racial insults and hatred are cast from the Oval Office or Chicago is held hostage because of our views on new Americans,” Johnson said.

Trump scolded Johnson in response, blaming him for not stemming violent crime. “Since Eddie Johnson has been police chief, more than 1,500 have been murdered in Chicago,” Trump said. “And 13,067 people have been shot.” Violent crime in Chicago has actually been on the decline since 2016, the year Johnson was appointed superintendent. According to the Chicago Tribune, homicides and shootings in 2019 are down 11 percent from this time a year ago. And the number of shootings is down more than 26 percent this year compared with 2016.

    is.jpg

And according to Chicago Police Department data cited by the Associated Press, the number of homicides in the city has dropped 31 percent thus far in 2019, compared with the same point in 2016, and shooting incidents have decreased by 38 percent over that same period. During a press briefing later Monday, Johnson touted the reductions in crime on his watch. “The progress that we’ve made as a city has gone unnoticed,” Johnson said. “We’re certainly not where we want to be, but we’ve made progress. … The national narrative that we’re a city on fire is just simply not true.” “Today the same police officers the president criticized for their inability to protect this city spent all day protecting him,” Johnson continued. “My job is to keep the city safe,” he added. “I’ve been a cop 31 years, I’ve been a superintendent for four years. I’ve dedicated my life to keeping this city safe. And that is my focus.”

A member of the GFA Normalisation Committee, Naa Odofoley Nortey, has admitted that fixing Ghana football involved so much work that her eyesight has had to take a hit.

Nortey was part of the Normalisation Committee that was put in place by FIFA after the events of the Anas “Number 12” documentary in August 2018 to run Ghana football and lay the grounds for changes in the statutes and the organisation of elections to find a new GFA boss to replace Kwesi Nyantakyi who had been allegedly implicated in the documentary. She said on Citi TV’s Face To Face with Godfred Akoto Boafo on Tuesday that she was very surprised at the sheer volume of work that had to be done in relation to repairing Ghana football and added lightly that as a consequence, it took a toll in terms of her eyesight.

“I did not expect that amount of work at the Ghana FA. Not at all. Of course, I had done a few cases at the Player Status Committee level at the FA for clubs that needed legal representation but I did not have an idea of the magnitude of work that had to be done. If I had had an inkling of the work to be done, perhaps, I would not have done it. I remember an incident when Mr Alex Asante came to one of our meetings with a huge file full of letters and other things that he said needed urgent attention. I did not believe so but he insisted that each item was urgent and so, I had to roll up our sleeves, look for my glasses and get to work.

And I blame the NC for my use of the glasses now. Before joining them, I had wonderful eyesight and now, I have glasses and I can hardly see without them now.”
