The Government of Ghana has noted that the country’s security agencies are taking the necessary measures to ensure that members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation who declared independence for ‘Western Togoland’ are dealt with according to the law.

In a statement issued by Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Government urged the public to disregard the independence claim by the group.

It would be recalled that over the weekend the Homeland Study Group Foundation declared independence for the Volta, and parts of the Northern, North Eastern and Upper East Regions after its meeting held in Ho.

HSGF has over the years been demanding the secession of what is referred to as the Western Togoland.

In May 2019, some members of the group were arrested by the police and charged with conspiracy to commit treason felony, abetment of unlawful training, unlawful assembly and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

Government said in its statement that “Ghana’s security agencies remain in firm charge of Ghana’s territory and encourage all persons to continue with their daily activities normally.”

Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon and the founder of “The Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Group”, Jack Ma arrived in Ghana on Friday, November 15, 2019, and paid separate courtesy calls on the President at Jubilee House.

Popular Chinese actor Jet Li was also not left out in the visit. They were, however, billed to speak at the maiden edition of the Africa Netpreneurship Summit, which was held at the Accra International Conference, on Saturday.

The news of their arrival, particularly with regards to renowned actor Jet Li travelled faster than imagined. Some Ghanaians in reaction to his arrival in the country together with the business tycoon and others took to their various social media pages to express their thoughts. Meanwhile, some questions relating to why and how these personalities made the decision to visit the country have been answered by presidential staffer, Gabby Otchere-Darko on his Twitter page.

He posted; “In China last year, President Akufo-Addo extended an invitation to Jack Ma to visit and invest in Ghana. This week that invitation was honoured and his comments about Ghana are most encouraging.”

Some families of the 39 Vietnamese people found dead in a truck in Britain last month will borrow money from the government to repatriate their relatives’ remains, they told AFP Tuesday.

Vietnam’s foreign ministry said they would help to bring either the ashes or the bodies of the victims back — but that families would have to cover the cost of repatriation. The price to bring ashes back in a jar was $1,774, while the fee to repatriate a body was $2,858, according to an official document shared with the families and seen by AFP. Families in central Vietnam, where many of the 39 victims come from, said they were desperate to bring their loved ones back nearly four weeks after the tragedy, despite the steep loans they will have to take on.

“We’re in deep pain, we just want him back soonest,” said Le Minh Tuan, whose 30-year-old son was among the victims found on October 23 in a refrigerated container in Essex. “We’ll pay any price, whether I have to sell my house or my land, I am determined to bring him back,” said Tuan, whose son Le Van Ha left behind two young children and a wife. The family already borrowed more than $30,000 to send Ha to Europe, a huge sum in his province of Nghe An where the average annual per capita income is around $1,200.

Tuan said he will opt to bring his son’s body back instead of ashes so he can give him a traditional burial. Cremation is not common in rural Vietnam where the majority of the 39 victims come from, and bodies are normally buried several days after death. The foreign ministry urged families to opt for cremation “to ensure speed, low cost and sanitation safety”, according to the document. Vo Thi Hong said the family would take on a bigger debt to give her brother Vo Nhan Du a traditional funeral.

“Our priority is to bring him back. We’ll think about how to pay the loan later,” she told AFP. The majority of the victims come from Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces in central Vietnam, impoverished parts of the country where the main source of income is fishing, farming, or factory work.

Many families took on thousands of dollars of debt to send their kids to Britain, where they hoped they would land good jobs to send money back home — and pay back their loans. The incident laid bare the dangers of illegal migration in Britain, a top destination for Vietnamese nationals who often work in cannabis farms or nail bars.

Janet Jackson fans are not happy with the singer.

They accused the star of lip-syncing during her RNB performance Friday night in Brisbane, Australia, and some walked out in protest. One fan told The Sunday Mail that the 53-year-old’s set was a “disaster.” “When Janet Jackson came on it was just a disaster,” one attendee said. “Her sound was just terrible. She would be singing and then all of a sudden just do random stuff.” Jackson was also slammed after similar things happened during a performance in Perth on Nov. 8.

“It was the worst performance of the night and probably the worst I’ve seen,” a fan said to Daily Mail Australia. “Once [Jackson] was on stage she started lip-syncing and it was so obvious she was dancing around trying to move the mic over her lips so we couldn’t see and she kept putting her hair over her face,” the ticketholder added.

Everyone started leaving and everyone was saying how disappointing it was. She was out of time for sure. We left when she tried to sing ‘Together Again.’” A reviewer of the concert described Jackson as having low energy onstage in WA Today.

There were “audio problems, with her lip-syncing painfully out of sync with the music and her performance lacking energy,” the critic wrote.

China’s biggest dump is already full — 25 years early — after the massive amount of waste produced by the country’s 1.4 billion people forced the garbage graveyard to accept four times as much trash per day as it was designed for.

The Jiangcungou landfill in the northwestern city of Xi-an was constructed in 1994 to serve more than eight million people. It was built to last until the year 2044 and encompassed 7,534,730 square feet, which is nearly the size of 100 football fields. Instead, China reached the 50-year threshold this year. Designed to take in 2,500 tons of trash each day, the dump received 10,000 tons of waste per day, the most of any landfill site in China, according to Sixth Tone.

“Waste [taken to the landfill] has increased nearly tenfold in the past 25 years, from 1,200 tons per day to around 10,000 tons per day,” Shen Chaofeng, whose department is in charge of the dump, told the outlet. Trash at the site allegedly is piled up 50 stories high in some spots. Xi-an was one of the few cities in China that relied on landfills to hold its waste before the area’s first incinerator opened earlier this month, which the BBC says led to the goal being reached early. The incinerator has a capacity of 2,000 tons of waste per day, according to the outlet. Four additional incinerators are scheduled to be completed by 2020 and should be able to dispose of 12,750 tons of waste each day.

“We have been gradually shutting down the site since October and will do so completely after the waste is commissioned to incineration facilities,” Shen, deputy head of the solid waste management department under the Xi’an Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau, told Sixth Tone. China collected nearly 215 tons of waste in 2017, up from 152 million just 10 years earlier. The country also had 654 landfills and 286 incineration plants.

In July, recycling was made mandatory in Shanghai, resulting in heavy fines and social credit rating lowering for people who failed to comply, according to the BBC. It’s part of a five-year plan in 2017 to reduce urban cities’ reliance on landfills while increasing the use of incineration to eliminate waste. As the country moves toward the process of incineration, the Jiangcungou landfill in Xi-an is expected to become an “ecological park” over the next several years, according to the outlet.

“We’ve added the plan to our agenda, but the details still need to be hammered out,” the official told Sixth Tone.

When the gunfire started at a Southern California high school on Thursday morning, many students reached for their phones and started texting.

“Hey mom i don’t know whats going on here at school but i love you and im so thankful for everything youve done for me,” a frightened student at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, Calif., wrote to her mother during a school shooting that killed at least two students. “everyone is saying theres a shooter on campus i dont know whats going on but i love you and dad so much.”

“Hey mom i don’t know whats going on here at school but i love you and im so thankful for everything youve done for me.” — Text from Saugus High School student

“I love you baby,” her mother Cari Wright wrote back, in texts shared with KABC-TV of Los Angeles. “Stay safe.”

Her daughter texted Wright that she was hiding in the music library with other students and later wrote that she thought she was “safe now i think” because they were being escorted out by police. After Wright was reunited with both of her daughters she told KABC, “I’m very, very happy and grateful for all the school staff that kept our students safe.”

The shooter was taken into custody after he was found on campus with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He also wounded three other students in the attack.

Andrei Mojica was in his Advanced Placement government class when he heard there was an active shooter. The students helped barricade the door – something they’ve practiced before. “There was just something different about it from a simple drill to real life,” he said, according to The Los Angeles Times. “We had no clue whether the shooter was on the opposite side of campus or right outside our door,” he said. “That fear made it feel like we were waiting in silence forever.”
